Soccer, also known as association football or just football, is a team sport which is played by two teams with eleven players each. It is considered as one of the, if not the most famous team sport internationally. A variant of football, soccer is played on a rectangular field that is planted with grass. This field could also be made with artificial turf.
A goal can be found on the centers of the short ends. This game has the object of scoring by moving or maneuvering the ball into the opposite goal. During play, it would only be the goal players who are allowed to make use of their arms or hands in propelling the ball, while the other players commonly make use of their feet in kicking the ball or their head or torso in intercepting the ball in mid-air. The team which scores the most number of goals at the end of the game wins.

Today, the game of soccer has created a frenzy all over the world. Some passionate soccer fans have even considered it to be a religion. However, where did the game of soccer originate?

The ancient Romans played a game which resembled it; however the said game was so violent that a lot of the players had to receive medical attention from the minor and major injuries they sustained during play. Other details about it from the ancient times are unavailable as historians were not that interested in sports-related activities and events back then. In the 14th century, there was an unfortunate soccer-related event when King Edward passed some laws which ordered anyone playing soccer to be imprisoned. The said law was made as the king said that the game generated too much noise from the players and from the people watching the game.

However, those laws against soccer did not discourage people from playing the game. In the beginning of the 19th century, the game started gaining popularity among the masses. Back then, there had been no official governing party so game events were just held by the individual clubs and other small groups of people.

Although many people seemed to grow a liking for the sport, most of the games did not end peacefully. Many players sustained injuries and people who were watching the game got into quarrels as they defended the team that they supported. Busted heads and broken legs were widely common during and after game play.

Eventually, the Football Association was formed, which only one college and some small groups of individuals joined. This association held a couple of meetings in 1863, which resulted to the formulation of the first set of agreeable rules and regulations. However, there were some rules that some members did not agree to, making them leave the association.

After a couple of years, in the 20th century, the Football Association became the FIFA or the
Federation Internatinale de Football Association. At first, many individuals and groups did not welcome their association, but later they were able to gain some amount of fame, making more people join them. Today, the FIFA is still the governing body in the official matches of soccer which are held between clubs and internationally and through Linux books (Linux Bücher).

The game of soccer has since produced many successful and talented players including Gary Lineker, England’s top scorer during the World Cup finals, having 10 goals. Another famous soccer personality is Sir Bobby Charlton, a former professional football player in England who was able to win the World Cup. He was even named as the 1966 European Footballer of the Year. Gazza or Paul John Gascoigne is also known in the world of football as he was considered as one of the most talented players during his generation. Some other famous names in soccer would include George Best and Mia Hamm.

Today, many individuals choose to have a career as a professional soccer player. As a matter of fact, there are many schools and institutions which concentrate in teaching the skills and knowledge needed to become successful and talented players in the sport.
